Just as ecpected5
I have nothing new to add to the reviews already online. The included software will not load on my computers, after making contact with Celestron I found a new release is in the works. The telescope optics are all I thought they would be. If I was intrested in deep sky I would have ordered a larger unit for the increased light gathering, but for planets and casual star gazing it is fine. My choice was between physical size and portability. I find this unit to fit my needs perfectly.

Celestron NexStar 5 SE Telescope4
Since I was new to Astronomy I selected a scope that I thought would meet my early needs and not be too complicated. The 5 SE scope has been a great purchase for me. My only stumble was telling the NexStar computer I used EST time instead of the Standard time we use during the winter. I couldn't align the scope which was frustrating. Once I figured out this bonehead move it's worked flawlessly since. Its ruggedly made and gives you a since that this is a quality telescope. Looking back I would probably buy a slightly larger Celestron scope (perhaps a six or eight inch scope) as this would give me additional, future, options as I build my skill set. Nonetheless this is a quality instrument and I know I'll spend more time outside with it once the weather warms a bit. The entire family has enjoyed including my three year old granddaughter...you should have seen her face once she saw the moon up close!

Good telescope, but Celestron does not give full specs upfront3
This is a very nice telescope. I have been using it the past week and have viewed the Moon, Venus, Jupiter. Overall the optics are excellent. But there are a few issues, which had I known earlier I may not have purchased this scope.

1. Celestron advertises that the scope can be used with 8 AA batteries. This is not completely true. The batteries drain very quickly and will probably not even last one viewing session (say 30 mins).

2. Without power the telescope cannot be moved along the azimuth (left-right direction). So you cannot use it at all.

So essentially if you want to take this telescope out of the city to some dark sky location you have to buy a powertank (or maybe run it off your car). I would have liked a design that allows me to use the goto feature when I want it but still be able to slew the telescope manually, without power.

Why do I still give it 3 stars. Well, Celestron tech support is very responsive (over e-mail). The telescope itself is excellent (optically). I have gotten very good views of planets. It has been a little too cloudy and light polluted (I live in a city) for me to try seeing nebulae.

Details:
The DC motors that slew the telescope are very sensitive to the voltage and current of the power supply. If you use the telescope for 20-30 minutes after that the batteries drain down and the scope becomes unusable (till you replace the batteries of course). Celestron tech support told me that they recommend using the battery only as an emergency back up!!! Strange that they don't mention on their website that batteries are only for "backup" and you have to run the telescope on wall socket, or a "power tank".

Okay tube, but the mount...2
This scope may be fine for low power terrestrial viewing, but the mount is way too spindly for any high power celestial work. The star finder is pretty much a joke as well, I guess that's why the better telescopes use an actual finder scope. When I first got it the optics were so far out of alignment I had to buy a collimation tool and set it up before I could even use it. The interior of the tube was also full of plastic flash and other debris and had to be cleaned out. If I wanted a telescope kit, I would have bought one.

The bottom line is, you get what you pay for. So do yourself a favor, spend more and get more. For ease of use, get the largest Dobsonian scope you can afford and just enjoy it.

Very good bang for the buck5
I bought this as my first telescope to explore the sky and I am VERY pleased. It's a high quality scope, and the mount and tripod are the kind you get with higher end models. Mine came with an incorrect piece, I contacted the Celestron, and I had a new piece in 3 days. Very nice service. I to had problems finding stars at first, so I went to an astronomy forum and found out the correct way to do it. From there, I haven't had a problem finding anything.

The 2 main things are 1) calibrate your finder first and 2) use the right eye piece when looking for something (this scope comes with a 10mm and a 20mm, so you would want to use the 20 to find and 10 to magnify once you found what it is your looking for). I have found Astronomy is not a hobby where you can easily learn stuff through trial and error, and most frustration comes when you try just that.

The only thing it's lacking is an eyepiece that goes to it's full magnification. I'm buying a 5mm for this, but if they included that, they would have to up the price. So all in all, this in my opinion is the best bang for the buck telescope out there for beginners on a budget!

A basic tool for a basic user3
This item was a good buy for our 10-year old, especially at the reduced price I paid. Set up was somewhat difficult for a beginner, and the weights provided were not enough to fully balance the telescope. However, good enough if you keep in mind that's not fully balanced. When the said up was complete it looked great and worked well.

The major problem we have is locating the stars...even when we seem to have the telescope pointing straight at a star, haven't been able to locate them. The powerseeker is of limited help. I presume this will come with experience.

Overall a good buy.

Great casual telescope4
A couple of negatives to start with. As others have indicated, once the electronics are turned off the current time is not kept. If you forget this important point aligning will not work. Next point. Double check that the tightening screw that secures the optical tube to the mount is tight every time you use the scope. I neglected to do this and the thing slid out of the mount and hit my patio. Unbelievably, nothing broke and the scope's collimation was not knocked askew. The good news is you can be using this scope in a manner of minutes after just a little practice. The optics are good and the tracking is too when you consider how inexpensive this machine is. Adding weight to the accessory tray helps with stability.

My First Scope5
I'm still learning how to use it but so far the things I see with it are amazing.

Strongly suggest AGAINST this Scope1
This may be a wonderful telescope. It is difficult for me to know since I have never been able to use mine. It was purchased, along with the Celestron eyepiece set and NexImage Camera for around $700.00 in September of this year.
The first scope had to be returned to Celestron because the tracking motor would not function on the day that I unpacked it.
After 4 weeks, I received the new scope.
The motor works but it will not track. I am unable to get the scope to align.
That covers the telescope. But the real problem is in the customer service. My first mistake was to send the scope in for repair. Because of the time involved, a refund becomes virtually impossible.
So now I am stuck with a $700.00 white elephant that Celestron wants me to send back to them again for further repairs and a further 4 weeks of waiting.
If you have to have this telescope, then buy it from Amazon so that you have the protection that I DO NOT have. I screwed myself on this deal because I trusted Celestron to be an honest company with quality products.
If you buy Celestron, make sure that you protect yourself.

Pretty nice 90mm refractor telescope, but don't buy the equitorial mount. Get it with an altitude/azimuth mount and you will be much happier.

Telescope3
Celestron 21064 AstroMaster 90 EQ Refractor Telescope
I ordered this telescope for my husband because he likes to watch birds from our highrise windows. The description said it was good for beginning stargazers and good for terrestrial viewing. It arrived very quickly and was easy to set up. So far, we have not been able to focus on anything ... so, everything we see is a big blur ... I am hoping we can adjust this telescope to view objects that are closer than the moon. I am beginning to think I should have purchased a really great pair of binoculars instead.

Okay Starter Telescope3
This is a good telescope for starters. The assembly was pretty straight forward but I have found that the structure is not terribly rigid and the finder scope is almost impossible to set without moving the alignment off the object to view. Stability is awful, the least bump will move the alignment and pulling and pushing allows tremendous slew. Great views of near objects (if you can find them without the finder scope being aligned.) Not for serious sky watchers.

its an "alright" telescope3
set up of the telescope is a breeze. the instructions were clear and also had pictures for reference. it took me about 10 minutes to get it together. i see people complaining the tripod is "unstable" NOT TRUE! its called tightening it! problem solved.
the finder scope is made of plastic but hey, its not your main scope and look at what you paid for. the entire setup does feel cheap but think of it in terms of value.
the entire weight is manageable, not portable but not very heavy.
the direction adjustment knobs stick out way too far for what it does and it might get in your way if your not careful.
now, lets get too the good stuff. WHAT CAN YOU SEE???
my first target was the moon, it was clear and high detail, not a difficult task. i went onto jupiter, pretty much the brightest thing in the sky, you can barely make out the red and cream swirls it has and you can see bright spots around it which are the 6? moons. you cannot see jupiter up close even with double scopes (x20 normal plus the x3 add-on). the image isnt the clearest but hey, terms of value.
if you are serious about getting into astronomy, move along with a different telescope. if you are looking for something to have some quick fun with friends and family, this is it.

A Good Telescope 4
Itis a wonderful product with minimum cost. I have tried to and have been able to see some spot in the Moon.
Good product.

Celestron NexStar 4 SE Telescope

To day I find introduce you this Celestron NexStar 4 SE Telescope from amazon and I read about that ,I think that wonderfull.

BuZZ from Customer Shopping

Decent Scope3
I purchased the scope from a chain camera shop during a 50% off clearance sale. The scope appears to be well made. The tripod and mounting are solid.

The optics seem pretty good but it has been hard to get a sharp focus on Jupiter and Saturn. Moon viewing has been great. I bought the lens accessory kit as well but have been unable to get a sharp view on the planets.

I have not had much luck with the sky align. Half the time the align fails and when I do get a good alignment it has only been marginal at finding objects. I normally resort to a sky map for navigation. The spotter scope is great when properly aligned to the telescope and it is easy to align. The scope is much better than the Tasco toy scope I had when I was a teen, but I wish I could get a sharp focus on the planets.

Pretty good telescope.4
Found this easy to use. I chose this one to buy as my first telescope after reading several reviews concerning a few different telescopes and comparing prices vs features.

The NexStar 4 SE telescope set up rather quickly. Sky align worked well, though sometimes the scope seemed to become less accurate as the hours went buy, and I tried to re-align to different stars but eventually I encountered the same alignment results.

The motor does sometimes jump and looses track of objects. Approaching the objects from a certain side seemed to help, as mentioned in the instruction book.

I did have to buy the additional eyepiece/filter kit. Clarity was rather good up to 6mm eyepiece, though the 4mm was pretty blurred, even for moon views.

Although the AC adaptor is a necessity for continuous power, I found out I already had one that fit my telescope from a car seat back massage/heater cushion which also had a car cig adaptor (which I bought for $19.99).

The computer info included in the hand controller is great though some of the 40,000 objects might not be viewable. I had problems finding some nebula and galaxies, maybe that are too faint.

I have seen Andromeda Galaxy, Orion Nebula, great Moon views, a very blurred mars view (cannot see any features), and extremely blurred Uranus (basically just blue color blurred).

I would have given it a 5 out-of 5 had the motor tracking been smoother, alignment stayed accurate. Besides that it met my expectations.

Fantastic Telescope5
This is a great telescope for many reasons. First, it is very easy to use. Most telescopes out there, even if they are computerized, are still difficult to align to the night sky before beginning use. The Nexstar 4SE with the sky align makes it fool proof because you only need to point it to 3 bright objects in the sky with no need to know what they are. One of the easiest ways to align it to the night sky is using a the Solar System Align. If you don't want to choose and point it at 3 bright objects, you can choose the moon. The moon is very easy to spot and easy to point the telescope. To me, this is the easiest alignment of all. After a few minutes setting them up, I found Jupiter easily after using the moon as the alignment object.
Secondly, for the price range, it is very well made and sturdy. Most of the components are metal which appears to make them rigid and durable. A rigid telescope makes them sturdy and shake free. It's 40,000 object database gives you enough things to look at for years and years.
The 4" optics on this is superb and the overall package is well worth the money. It is great for looking at planetary objects and deep sky.
Highly recommended.

good optics4
The optical quality is quite good, with a good field of view and very limited spider effect. The star pointer is fair to poor however if used with a low power lens (25mm or larger) it will suffice. Barlow usage is excellent and I'm amazed at lunar observation. Only other gripe is when slewing at a low polar angle you can run into the knobs. Mount seems solid however I don't care for the dec. setup. The focuser could stand a little more travel but is adequate for this scopes capability. Overall I give it 5 stars for lunar and terrestrial use, four and a half for planetary (excellent on Jupiter and Venus, struggles with Neptune and Uranus) but with some filters I hope to improve that. Deep sky is fair. The star finder I give a one.

Celestron 130 review4
I'm very pleased with this telescope. I've always looked up at the stars in wonder, now I can see more then I thought were out there. This is a great starter scope, from what I've been told by people who love this hobby. The telescope lets you view the sky to see stars you can't see with your eyes. I'm disappointed in the eye piece you receive with it though. The field of view is very narrow, hard to find the stars you want to see. I was given a wide angle eye piece, to use from a friend, which made my viewing pleasure wonderful. I went from looking at a 13" color tv to a 36" color tv. That's the best way to describe it.

I'm glad I got my telescope and will enjoy it for years to come.

Excellent value dual purpose child's telescope4
I got this for an eight year old girl and she loves it. It's much bigger and heavier than I expected and requires adult assembly but it's a serious device and will provide many years of service. This model can be used for viewing the moon and stars or distant earthbound items by changing the eyepiece.

Oh my Goodness what a great buy5
I bought this telescope for my son for Christmas, It looks like it cost as much as some of the high priced telescopes and it works just as well, This is quite a bang for the buck. Thank goodness for Amazon I order everything from here now.

Terrific Telescope for the Price!5
The Celestron 21061 Astromaster is a high quality telescope for beginners. I purchased the telescope for my 6 year old son. He absolutely loves it and we have spent every night since exploring the stars and moon. The tripod is very sturdy and of high quality. I highly recommend this product.

Very good set.5
For this price, this set of lenses and filters is a VERY good buy. Haven't used the filters as much, but all the lenses are pretty neat. The Aluminum case is very compact and has a good feel to it. I'm an amateur star-gazer, and this was my first buy after purchasing the telescope. Next on the list is a solar filter.

Highly recommend this.

fantastic for the price4
this is the best deal on the web i have found for the money and investment. Thanks for the great deal.

Power Supply problem --a bit disappointing for such an expensive scope3
I received this telescope as a gift for Christmas. My husband did much research and purchased the telescope as well as ac/dc and portable power supply.

I was very fortunate that he purchased those external sources of power as the power source using the batteries is faulty. Loaded up 8 brand new batteries and turned on the scope: NOTHING. Thought perhaps they were loaded wrong, removed them and reinserted the batteries. Still nothing. Tried another set of brand new batteries. Still NOTHING.

I have been able to use the scope, it works well on external power, however if the power supply comes loose for even a second, I have to re-align the scope because the battery power supply seem disconnected from the scope. I have tried to call Celestron however, they are on vacation until 1/4/2009. Wonderful. I really don't want to send the scope back for this (which they would cover under warranty I am sure--except they won't pay for shipping).

Very disappointed with this as the scope was pricy.

E-mailed Celestron and received reply after everyone returned from vacation. I will have to return the base to the to have it evaluated.

Excellent Telescope !5

When I opened the package I was surprised the quality of the product. I went right away to test it in my first night. Due to Florida's terrible rainy days lately it was mostly cloudy yet I was able to see Mars, Saturn's rings, Jupiter's moon and clouds, even behind a tinted glass! That's how high quality these optics are. Able to gather celestial light even with such terrible viewing conditions.

The eyepiece that came with it(25mm)is of very good quality itself, I bought a an eyepiece set but I still find myself using it a lot. The tracking does drain batteries fast so I had no choice than to upgrade to an AC power supply. Due to high humidity, dew was a problem on the optics, had to buy a dew shield.

To summarize, every penny spent on it was well worth it. This really isn't an entry level telescope so it does cost a lot but it also shows on the quality and what you can see through it.

I definitely recomend buying this telescope if you are serius about astronomy or want a real good telescope.
It's no wonder this is the most popular telescope these days.

Awesome telescope5
I got this telescope last year because Celestron was having a huge rebate. They tend to give a 200 dollars off rebate every 1/2 year. Since then, I've added a light pollution filter and a heater to it, along with a Denkmeier Power Switch. The quality of this telescope is top notch, and I've been able to hook up my laptop to it for control. I use a 12 volt, 2 amp power adapter when I'm outside in the garden. So far, from my suburban light polluted environment, I've seen over 60 Messier objects. The telescope is perfectly collimated. I highly recommend anyone looking for a computerized telescope to select this one.
